What Is A Heart Palpitation?

Palpitation is characterized when the heart either beats irregularly or faster than its regular workload. As a result, the person notices that there is something wrong with the regular beating of the heart, and the palpitations are commonly noticed along the pulse on the neck/throat area or at the chest itself.

Although heart palpitations are not serious and harmful, they are still frightening and bothering. They are commonly caused by anxiety and stress, as well as too much consumption of products with alcohol, nicotine and caffeine. Specifically, management of heart palpitations is based on its underlying cause. But if palpitations are due to unknown reasons, certain lifestyle changes could help prevent the condition from occurring. Certain self-management techniques to avoid palpitations from triggering include the following:

Reducing causes of stress and anxiety. Stress-reducing techniques such as relaxation, light exercises, deep breathing and other therapeutic regimens could help prevent and control palpitations.

Lifestyle changes, especially with diet, are also helpful. Reduction of certain beverages, foods and substances that are high in caffeine, alcohol or nicotine could reduce palpitation attacks.

Avoiding certain medications that could trigger palpitations; stimulants commonly add up to the possibility of having heart palpitations, so if you are taking cough and cold medications with stimulants, you should seek medical assistance before further using it.

Most Importantly, Consult Your Doctor

If self-help techniques do not alleviate symptoms of palpitations, then this means that there is an underlying cause for it. You may need to consult your doctor for further management and evaluation of your condition.
