How to treat boxer’s fracture
A boxer’s fracture is a break on one or more of the bones that forms the knuckle called the metacarpals. This hand fracture is caused by an impact to the knuckles and a common metacarpal fracture.
Symptoms of boxer’s fracture
- Pain or tenderness of the affected area
- Pain when moving the hand or fingers
- Snapping or popping sensations of the affected bone
- Swelling of the area
- Discolor or bruising
- Deformity of the bone or knuckle
- Abnormal movement of the broken bone fragments
- Pain when pressing the broken bone
- The affected area is misaligned when making a fist
- Severe type of boxer’s fracture causes a cut in the skin
- Apply ice pack on the affected area to lessen the swelling and the pain. Wrap ice pack in a towel before placing to the area to prevent frostbite and worsen the condition. Another alternative is soaking a clean towel in cold water wring out excess water and placed on the area is also good for the condition.
- Elevate the hand above the level of the heart to lessen the swelling.
- An open cut caused by the fracture should be washed with soap and water to prevent the risk of developing an infection and delay the healing. Cover the area with a clean bandage immediately.
- Prescribed boxer’s fracture splint to immobilize the area, prevent unnecessary movement and also prevent further irritations on the surrounding muscles, tendons, blood vessels, ligaments and nerves. Splints should be kept dry and should not be too tight to prevent further irritations and delay the healing.
- Prescribed pain medications to lessen the pain and the inflammations.
- Perform some rehabilitation exercises with the help of the physical therapist to lessen the pain, restore strength and normal range of movement of the fractured knuckles. Electrical stimulation to lessen swelling and pain. Massage to improve mobility of the muscles, skin and tendons around the hand and wrist.
- Improve punching techniques
- Increase consumption of dairy products to get the proper amount of calcium to make bone in the hands strong.
- Keep the skin well hydrated using lotions and oils to prevent the skin from cuts and lacerations when punched.
- Soak the hands in warm water to relax tendons and muscles around the fingers. Stretch the finger in frequent intervals and massage gently the hands.
