Arthritis is a disorder wherein joints are affected and featuring inflammation. This causes pain and swelling in your joints. The meeting of two different bones, such as elbow or knee are called joints. Swollen joints can be severely damaged over time. This can also cause problems in you organs, such as your eyes or skin.

What are the signs and symptoms of arthritis?

Symptoms may include joint pain, stiffness, redness, and swelling. Decreased range of motion of the affected joints may also be experience. A person with arthritis may also encounter muscle weakness, loss of flexibility, and decreased aerobic fitness.

Types of Arthritis

  • Osteoarthritis – the most common type of arthritis which is often related to a wound or aging.
  • Autoimmune arthritis – occurs when the body’s immune system strike healthy cells in the body by fault.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis – It is a chronic progressive disease that causes inflammation in the joints and resulting in painful deformity and immobility. Symptoms may include swelling, inflammation, painful swelling and stiffness in fingers, legs, ankles, wrists and arms occurring in the same joints on the body, especially upon waking up.
  • Juvenile arthritisis a type of arthritis that happens in children.
  • Infectious arthritis– It is an infection that spreads from another part of the body to the joint. Symptoms include fever, chills, joint inflammation, tenderness, and sharp pain associated with injury and infection in the body.
  • Gout– It is a painful kind of arthritis.  It is caused by ample amount of uric acid build up. It often attacks the huge toe. The person may experience sore, redness, warm and swollen toe.


How to avoid Arthritis?


  • Proper exercise – It can strengthen the muscles around the joints that prevents from tearing.
  • Eat fish – Fishes provides omega-3 fatty acids that help in reducing inflammation of the body.
  • Weight control – Diet and exercise can bring your weight into a healthier range.
  • Get a massage – regular massage of arthritic joints reduces pain and stiffness
  • See your Doctor – If you are starting to develop arthritis, see your doctor or a rheumatologist.


Medication to arthritis may include the following:


  • These medications help reduce pain, but have no effect on inflammation
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which help reduce swelling and stiffness.
  • Counterirritants which relieves pain.
  • Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) which help treat inflammation.
  • Biologic response modifiers
  • These are anti-inflammatory medicine for a wide range of conditions.
  • Steroids are most commonly used to treat inflammatory arthritis.
